I know you are thinking what the heck is that crazy Judy throwing at us now? As some of you know I have been training in what we call MBSR ( Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction). I have to be honest with you this is one training that has truly altered my entire world. Over the decades I have trained in plenty of stress reducing, and centering techniques but there has not been that ONE that connects with me like this one does. I am excited to finish the training and add these services to my company’s offerings. I think mindfulness is something that can benefit EVERYONE no matter what you do, and no matter what age, race, religion and country you live in. We can all learn to practice this technique and have it change our life on a HUGE level.

So here is a quick explanation of what I mean by that crazy post title. We can not control what life throws at us. BUT what we can control is learning to live in the present moment, watching each one of those waves come in and THEN deciding which wave we want to CATCH and which wave we want to LET PASS ON BY.

I know that seems deep and all but it really is not I promise. There are lots of different approaches to being mindful. I am not a believer in any one method. I am approaching my training like I do my health coaching, there is no one way that fits everyone. I will be studying from all of the top experts in this field then tailoring my practice according to each individuals needs.

Here is a brief explanation of what mindfulness means from Shamash Alidina

-Paying attention. To be mindful, you need to pay attention, whatever you choose to attend to.

-Present moment. The reality of being in the here and now means you just need to be aware of the way things are, as they are now. Your experience is valid and correct just as it is.

-Non-reactively. Normally, when you experience something, you automatically react to that experience according to your past conditioning. For example, if you think, ‘I still haven’t finished my work’, you react with thoughts, words and actions in some shape or form. Mindfulness encourages you to respond to your experience rather than react to thoughts. A reaction is automatic and gives you no choice; a response is deliberate and considered action.

-Non-judgmentally. The temptation is to judge experience as good or bad, something you like or dislike. I want to feel bliss; I don’t like feeling afraid. Letting go of judgements helps you to see things as they are rather than through the filter of your personal judgements based on past conditioning.

-Open-heartedly. Mindfulness isn’t just an aspect of mind. Mindfulness is of the heart as well. To be open-hearted is to bring a quality of kindness, compassion, warmth and friendliness to your experience. For example, if you notice yourself thinking ‘I’m useless at meditation’, you discover how to let go of this critical thought and gently turn your attention back to the focus of your meditation, whatever that may be.
