If it has a label then don’t eat it!

Processed foods are not whole foods.  The longer the list of ingredients, the further you should stay away. I know this sounds harsh but I want to challenge you to just try it for a week and see how you feel.  If you really want to try and Eat Clean then you need to start somewhere right? Summer is such a good time to try this out. The fruits and vegetables that grow in the summer are some of the best stuff that is produced in all of the seasons in my opinion.

I know if you are reading this article you are some what interested in living a healthier lifestyle so I won’t bore you with some of the basic food label things you already know. But it is a good time for me to remind you of some of the really scary ones you need to watch out for.

These are some of the words that are big red alerts, stop and put it down!

Artificial  (anything) Do not be fooled by this one. One of the ones that drives me crazy is seeing artificially flavored tea. WHY????????
High fructose corn syrup- This one is bad, avoid it at all cost.
Artificial sweeteners-Aspartame, Neotame, Saccharin, Sucralose.
Carminic acid (crushed bug parts)- This creeps me out bad.
Sodium benzoate- You can read about this one here but here is a glimpse: Sodium benzoate is also used in fireworks as a fuel in whistle mix.
Ammonium sulfate (fertilizer) Awesome lets eat something that helps our lawn keep bugs off of it. Eghads!
Refined grains I know this doesn’t sound artificial but it is. Check out this article.
Shellac (more bug parts)- Nuff said!!!!!!!!!!!!! BARF
Castoreum (beaver anal glands)-DITTO above
Gum base (from sheep)- Gum base contains Lanolin.  Lanolin is the oily secretion found in sheep wool. Every time you chew, you’re chewing sheep sweat.
L-cystine (hair or duck feathers)The major commercial sources of L-cysteine today are Chinese and Indian avian feathers and human hair
Olestra-Do you remember this stuff??????
LOW FAT- I fell for this for so many years. It was not till I took my nutrition courses that I really understood why low fat is bad. Full fat for us always.
Sugar (there are about 400 different names for sugar…Check out this great article on sugar.
Bleached white flour-Seriously why would you waste your time. Throw it away now! 🙂
Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil / Hydrogenated Soybean Oil- Trans Fats– Remember these bad boys? Trash it quick. There is nothing positive about them.

Things you should eat:

Almost anything in the produce section!  Whole Foods! Things not in a jar, can or container. Visit your local farmers market and explore the world of whole foods.

Please take my challenge 🙂
