How to clean your house without chemicals

Did you know that the standard cleaner you pick up at the grocery store has hundreds of toxic chemicals in it?  Check out this article published by the David Suzuki Foundation and tell me what you think after reading it. Are you freaked out? I was so freaked out when I learned about this in one of my courses. We work so hard at keeping our bodies free of chemicals from food but too often people forget about the cleaners we have under our sink.  According to the American Lung Association there are what they call VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) in most of the things we buy at the grocery store. These VOC’s are linked to asthma issues, allergy issues and other respiratory disturbances in people. These are only some of the things that have been studied, can you imagine all the other things these buggers are probably doing to us?  These VOC’s are in so many things and most of us did not know they even existed. Some of the items that typically contain VOC’s are:

Aerosol spray products, including health, beauty and cleaning products;

  • Air fresheners;
  • Chlorine bleach;
  • Detergent and dishwashing liquid;
  • Dry cleaning chemicals;
  • Rug and upholstery cleaners;
  • Furniture and floor polish; and
  • Oven cleaners.

Do you have any of these in your home?  One day about a year ago Mike and I went around the entire house and just threw all our cleaning products away. I was sick to my stomach that we had been working so hard to be healthy and toxic free and yet we still had so many of these things in our house.  Thankfully I have learned the power of essential oils and how they cannot only do the trick of cleaning but they can do it better than those toxic monsters.    Many Essential Oils are anti-microbial, insecticidal, disinfectant, anti-fungal and anti-viral.  This fall why not dedicate one day to clearing out all the harmful cleaning products in your home and replacing them with homemade products that you make from essential oils and other non-toxic ingredients?  You can turn up the music and make a day out of it. You will feel better when you are done I promise you.

Here are a few of my favorite recipes:

Air Freshener

2 oz. clean spray bottle

15 drops of Sweet Orange Essential Oil (You can use any essential oil that you like but this is one of my favorites)

1 oz. of distilled water

1 oz. of witch hazel (or you can use a high proof alcohol just as vodka)

Fill the spray bottle with the water/alcohol and or witch hazel

Add your essential oil and shake really good because oil and water do not mix you are going to want to shake this very good before each use. When I need a pick me up during the day I use Lime Essential Oil

Soft Scrub for your tubs and sinks

I think it works best if you use a 2 or 4 oz. wide mouth jar for this recipe.

1/4 cup of baking soda (I get the big bag from Costco as I use this stuff a lot)

1/8 tbsp. of cornstarch or arrowroot powder

1/2 tbsp. white vinegar (mix all of these together now)

2 tbsp. castile soap

4 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil

2 drops of Pine Essential Oil

4 drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil

4 drops of Pink Grapefruit Essential Oil

Mix well and cover tightly. Make sure you label it 🙂

2 1/2 tbsp. liquid Castile Soap

1 gallon of hot water

10 drops Pine Essential Oil

5 drops Cypress Essential Oil

Combine all ingredients in a large bucket and mop. Rinsing isn’t necessary unless floor is unusually dirty.

So what do you think? Are you excited to whip up some natural, chemical/toxin free cleaners?  Make sure and leave a comment if you try one or if you have a recipe to share.
